About Us

Clinical Corpus was founded by Dr. Alexandre Bandeira de Mello, a Brazilian physician who has spent as much time inside hospitals as he has online — often working at the intersection of the two, decades before “digital health” was a phrase anyone used.

Dr. Bandeira de Mello is a specialist in Internal Medicine and Obstetrics, and holds a postgraduate degree in Clinical Governance from Hospital Sírio-Libanês de São Paulo. Over more than 40 years of practice, he spent 29 years in the emergency room of a 500-bed hospital, worked 15 years in private practice in hospitals of Rio de Janeiro, and 15 years in home care medicine — a combination that gave him an unusually broad view of how patients move through a healthcare system, hospital ward and all.

His relationship with computers goes back further still — before the IBM PC, before MS-DOS had a name most people recognized. He was online before the Web existed too, navigating the early Internet through Unix tools like Archie and Gopher, and later became an early, avid user of AltaVista and WebCrawler, the search engines that came before Google.

In 1993, he founded Século 21 BBS — Brazil’s second Bulletin Board System with internet access — offering a medical file database and Usenet’s medical discussion groups. That same year, his BBS launched Brazil’s first online conference on Intensive Care, which ran for five years nationwide, and also offered medical literature searches by email via Tel Aviv University’s now-defunct BITNIS service, a search tool that ran over BITNET.

He has remained a heavy user of medical databases ever since, and along the way translated from English to Portuguese two books on alternative medicine that are still sold on online platforms today.

More recently, his focus has turned to AI in medicine. He built ZipMed Guideline Navigator, an AI based app since retired as the medical AI landscape shifted underneath it.

Clinical Corpus, this RAG-based search platform on Clinical AI Models, is his latest enterprise.
